Swim With Me: The History

Hello once again! In this post I will be sharing with you a sewing passion of mine, Swimwear “Bathing suit”. I love to design and make swimwear. I made swimwear for customers, friend and family especially for my two sisters. I had the opportunity to get back into sewing swimwear for 2014 carnival for a couple of ladies who wanted Monokinis for carnival Monday. Of course that trigger my love once more.
Sizing for swimwear can be tricky, so I resort to custom making swimwear for women of different sizes. At the end they are satisfied and I feel fulfilled doing one of my favourite thing
I will share with you the history of swimwear and then I will go into the different style for your body type I hope this excites you as much as it excites me.

Swimwear “Bathsuit” The History.
I hope it not surprising to you that the fashion history of swimwear was principally from dresses and the outfits worn in the 18th  Century which was very modest, their body was almost totally covered because it was considered improper to skin.

http://www.victoriana.com/library/Beach/FashionableBathingSuits.htm
   18th Century:

"This 1797 Gallery of Fashion print shows two ladies protected by face-shading bonnets, shawls and glove "

Regency Era:

Fashionable Sea-Side Walking Dress
La Belle Assemblee Fashions, Sept 1810

"A gown of white French cambric, or pale pink muslin, with long sleeves, and antique cuffs of thin white muslin worn over trowsers of white French cambric, which are trimmed the same as the bottom of the dress. A figured short scarf of pale buff, with deep pale-green border, and rich silk tassels; with gloves of pale buff kid; and sandals of pale yellow, or white Morocco, complete this truly simple but becoming dress."

Mid-19th Century:

“In the mid-19th century bathing dresses covered most of the female figure. These garments were highlighted in Godey’s Lady’s Book in 1864. the long bloomers exhibit the influence of Amelia Bloomer’s innovative ideas for women’s clothing. The ”turkish” pants and “paletot” dresses are made from a heavy flannel fabric which would surely weigh down the swimmer”.

1890s`:

1900:

“Swimsuit retains modesty but was free enough to allow the young lady to engage in swimming was obvious.

1910:

“By 1910 bathing suits no longer camouflaged the contours of the female body. The yards of fabric used in Victorian bathing skirts and bloomers were reduced to show a little more of the figure and to allow for exposure to the sun.”

1915:

“Up until the first decades of the 20th century, the only activity for women in the ocean involved jumping through the waves while holding on to a rope attached to an off-shore bouy. By 1915, women athletes started to share the actual sport of swimming with men and thus began to reduce the amount of heavy fabric used in their billowing swimsuits”

1920s:

“By the early 1920s women’s bathing suits were reduced to a one piece garment with a long top that covered shorts. Though matching stockings were still worn, vintage swimwear began to shrink and more and more flesh was exposed from the bottom of the trunks to the tops of the stockings. By the mid-1920s Vogue magazine was telling its readers that “the newest thing for the sea is a jersey bathing suit as near a maillot as the unwritten law will permit

Hmmm! what a long way we have come. Some of the  swimwear of today is by no means modest. but i must say they did inspire a lot other garments we wear under our clothing today. STAY BLOGGED ON FOR MORE....

Working The Jeans: The Fit part 2

Fit challenge: Hourglass figure

Jeans should hug your curves, not squish and contort them.
Solution: Something with straight lines gives balance to your curves.
What to look for:
  • Choose a pair that’s fitted in the hips with straight legs this will add a slimming  and elongate long to your figure.
  • Go for a high waist this will eliminate muffin top.
  • A pairs of jeans made with a little stretch will  help smooth your body lines and hug curves

Fit challenge: Long Waist

When your torso  is long means that your jeans don`t move with you when walking this may cause exposure to your butt.
Solution: Jeans that sit higher on the waist or even jeans with hidden elastic sewn inside will help prevent too much skin from showing.
What to look for:

  • Jeans with higher waistline  will help you a good fit.
  • Jeans that are non - will sit on you better than stretch

Fit challenge: Large Hips
Basically Jeans that fit your hips does not fit your waist causing the fabric to  bulk out, mostly at the back.
Solution: Look for jeans with straight legs and a lightweight fabric that will drape nicely. Many companies―like Lee, Lane Bryant and Gap―offer jeans in a variety of cuts that address specific body types. What to look for:
  • Legs that hang straight from the hip tend to be more flattering than a boot cut.
  • Plain finishes are best. leave the faded type alo effects that emphasize specific parts of the body.
  • New trends that fit perfectly and comfortable are pullons

Fit challenge: No butt
Jeans look great on you from the front but there's a little bit of bagginess in the back or, even worse, jeans flatten your shape.Solution: Get a little extra oomph! This pair has built-in padding to give your rear a natural-looking roundness.
What to look for:

  • Try padding, either built in or in a separate shaper.
  • Skip flat pockets. Slit pockets show off the natural curve of the behind, and pockets with a flap add a little extra volume.

Working The Jeans: The Fit

I found this awesome article " Denim Dos: How to find jeans that fit your body type (and look great!)"  It offers great advice on choosing jeans that flatter your figure and minimize your flaws

http://www.allyou.com/style-for-less/fashion/jeans-for-body-type/butt-enhancing-jeans

Fit challenge: Plus-size curves

when you are curvy and finding jeans that give you a slimming look and with comfort. try this. Solution: The slight flare of a boot-cut style balances curvy hips and s full bust.
What to look for:A medium rise that has stretch will allows for easy movement.

Fit challenge: Full thighs

You want to show of your trimmed waistline while rock those slim thighs, try this:
Solution: Try tapered jeans with a no-gap hidden elastic waistband that hugs curves.
What to look for:
  • Choose a pair that’s cut specifically for curvy figures, or pick a style that has built-in features such as an elastic waistband.
  • Stretchy fabrics help hold in thighs and provide a better fit if your waistline is smaller than your hips.
  • Dark finishes are more slimming than light.

Fit challenge: Long legs

Pant sometimes to short on your long legs, making it impossible to find an elegant pair try this.
Solution: Boot-cut jeans adds a little flattering to long legs

Jeans are the most worn clothing in your closet, and getting a pair with the right fit and comfort is important and key to looking good. So ladies we have to work those Jeans..

Working the Jeans: The History

The History of Jeans ....
Denim and jeans - where do the names come from?
The word jeans comes from a kind of material that was made in Europe. The material, called jean, was named after sailors from Genoa in Italy, because they wore clothes made from it. The word 'denim' probably came from the name of a French material, serge de Nimes: serge (a kind of material) from Nimes (a town in France).
At first, jean cloth was made from a mixture of things. However, in the eighteenth century as trade, slave labour, and cotton plantations increased, jean cloth was made completely from cotton. Workers wore it because the material was very strong and it did not wear out easily. It was usually dyed with indigo, a dye taken from plants in the Americas and India, which made jean cloth a dark blue color.

Deconstructed denim

Jean fabric and a rivet
  • Denim twill is made with two yarns - one dyed indigo, the other undyed. Indigo yarn is most visible on the outside, undyed yarn on the inside
  • Rivets reinforce the stitching
  • Jeans are made from dark "raw" denim, but most are washed or treated before sale
  • Over time, indigo dye rubs off

Fake it to Flatter it: Tip # 2

Hello once again, I do hope my blog is helping in some way.  Staying in line with the body shape, in this post, "Fake it and Flatter it: Tip #2" I will be giving you some tips and tricks you can use to fool the eyes into seeing you as perfectly shaped when you are wearing pants.

Tip #2

Wearing pants that flatter your body shape.

There are many styles of pants on the market, but, did you know? there are pants which can make you look taller, acts like tummy trimmers and create the illusion of slimmer thighs, well there are, and many brand designer has done lots of research for the every day women (the none model) when it comes to getting us to look great in there clothes.

Here are some tips I found
on pants, on http://www.allyou.com/style-for-less/fashion/choose-flattering-jeans Tips that will allow you to fake it to flatter it.

Best Leg Lengthener

The front seam that extends from waist to ankle on this skinny pair helps create a long, slim line that adds inches to short gams. Petite Scuba Lean Trousers, Loft.com.

Best Dressy
Slightly shiny fabric and a straight fit make for timeless after-dark elegance. MNG by Mango Pant, JCPenney.com.

Best Tummy Trimmer

Talk about black magic. Slip into these slacks and the ultrawide (and slightly stretchy) waistband makes tummy pudge— poof! —disappear. Apt. 9 Maxwell Straight-Leg Pants, Kohls.com.

Best Thigh Slimmer

A slight flare at the hem visually balances ample thighs, and the flat front keeps the hip area smooth and streamlined. Essential Wide-Leg Trousers, OldNavy.com.

These pants tips worked well for me. Looking  pants that fit is never pleasant for me, so as a seamstress, I make my own. I have thick thighs and a little tummy, so I found my self designing around two of the styles, the Thigh Slimmer- which is straight on the legs, but not baggy to add bulk and the Tummy Trimmer- by eliminating the front darts on pant I was able to get an awesome fit which takes off a little of my tummy, awesome!!
These tips will in some way have you shopping different for your pants.

Pants to Suit Your Body Shape

Shopping for pants can be a daunting task for many of us. Especially when the market is flooded with pants that are in fashion and you would like to be a part of that trendy look. When we do get one that fits and flatter our unique body shape, our confidence level is boosted and we feel emotionally satisfied. The hurdle of knowing your body shape is one less issue to worry about. According to http://lifestyle.howstuffworks.com/style/tips-advice/guide-to-finding-pants-that-fit.htm click on link to read more..
There are a couple of factors that go into finding the right pants for your body shape. The cut of the leg has a huge influence on the final outcome, and so does rise, which is the measurement between the crotch and the top of the waistband. The combination of these two things can make or break your ensemble because what flatters one body style may look all wrong on another. And then, of course, there's a matter of finding the right size -- one that doesn't gap in the waist or fit too snugly in the hips.
The problem lies in the fact that sizes often vary among different brands. So while you may be a comfortable size 10 in one label, a size 12 may strain at the thighs in another. The lesson we can learn from this? Try not to get obsessed with the number in the waistband. The goal is to find a pair of pants that fit well -- and that's what will make you feel the best.

When choosing pants ensure you get the fit and comfort you are looking for. Choosing trendy over comfort and fit not always flattering for all body types. Your mirror is your best friend use it.
We will be working those Jeans next ladies.
